£17 Million Boost for AI Scholarships: Opening Doors to Diversity and Skills in Tech

Lion Herald Newsletter | Issue #22 - Wednesday / November 15, 2023 | Lincoln, UK

Dear Lion Herald Reader,

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport, in collaboration with the Office for Artificial Intelligence and The Rt Hon Chris Philp MP, announced Today a £17 million initiative to create 2,000 scholarships in AI and data science conversion courses in England.

The primary objective is to enhance diversity and skills within the tech industry, specifically targeting underrepresented groups, including women, black individuals, people with disabilities, and those from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds.

The scholarships aim to provide opportunities for individuals with no prior experience in the field, fostering inclusivity in the UK’s globally renowned Artificial Intelligence (AI) sector.

This government-funded initiative encourages companies to co-fund the AI scholarships, creating a collaborative effort to boost the skills pipeline for the future workforce. Each scholarship, valued at £10,000, will contribute to masters-level AI and data science conversion courses.

The program is designed to welcome graduates from non-STEM backgrounds, allowing them to pursue further studies in the AI field, ultimately producing a new generation of experts in data science and AI.

Open to anyone meeting a participating university's entry requirements, the courses aim to democratize access to AI education. Interested applicants can apply for scholarships through their respective universities, and further details are available on the universities' websites.

This inclusive approach seeks to break down barriers, ensuring that opportunities in the AI and data science job market are accessible to a more diverse demographic.

The government is actively encouraging industry players to join this transformative initiative by contributing to the funding of AI scholarships.

The collaboration between government and industry is expected to expedite the entry of more individuals into the AI and data science job market, reinforcing the strength of UK businesses in this rapidly evolving sector.

The initiative builds upon the success of the 2019 AI and data science conversion courses, which supported 28 universities in England. The £13.5 million AI Scholarship program demonstrated a commitment to diversity, with 76% of scholarship students being women and 45% being black, significantly boosting representation in AI and data science courses.

The second phase of the program was set to commence in April 2023 and will run until 2025, with an open competition for universities to bid for scholarships later this year.

This scholarship program aligns with the government's National AI Strategy, emphasizing long-term investment in the AI ecosystem to secure the UK's position as a global science and AI superpower.

By supporting a more diverse and skilled workforce, the initiative contributes to the transition to an AI-enabled economy, ensuring the benefits of innovation are widespread across sectors and regions.

Notable figures in the AI landscape, including UK AI Council Chair Tabitha Goldstaub and Obum Ekeke OBE from DeepMind, commend the initiative for its focus on diversity, emphasizing the importance of representative talent in driving AI developments.

An independent organization, to be revealed later this year, will play a key role in encouraging industry participation and investment in the AI Scholarships scheme.

The £17 million investment in AI scholarships signifies a bold step towards a more inclusive and skilled workforce in the UK's AI sector. By removing barriers and fostering diversity, this initiative contributes to the growth and innovation of AI, ensuring that the benefits of this transformative technology are shared by all.
