New Rules for Safe Self-Driving Cars on UK Roads
Lion Herald Newsletter | Issue #17 - Thursday / November 9, 2023 | Lincoln, UK

Greetings,
Self-driving cars are on the horizon, and they promise to make travel easier for those who can't drive. The UK government is taking significant steps to ensure that these vehicles are safe and accessible. Here's what you need to know:
New laws were introduced in Parliament on November 8, 2023, to ensure that self-driving cars are safe to use on UK roads. This marks a big leap forward for the UK in becoming a global leader in the self-driving car industry, which is estimated to be worth £42 billion.
Self-driving cars have the potential to reduce accidents caused by human errors, such as drunk driving, speeding, and tiredness, which are factors in 88% of road collisions. To make sure these vehicles are safe, the new laws set strict safety requirements that self-driving cars must meet.
What Will the New Laws Do?
The Automated Vehicles (AV) Bill is a comprehensive legal framework for self-driving cars. It focuses on safety and protecting users. Here's what it will do:
Rigorous Safety Standards: The law will specify the safety standards that self-driving cars must meet. It will also give the government the power to enforce these standards and hold companies accountable.
Legal Liability: Companies that make self-driving cars will be responsible for how their vehicles behave on the road. This ensures that users are not unfairly blamed for any issues.
Consumer Protection: Only vehicles that meet the strict self-driving standards can be marketed as such. This prevents misleading advertising about self-driving capabilities.
Before self-driving cars can be used on UK roads, they must undergo rigorous safety testing. Each self-driving vehicle will have an Authorised Self-Driving Entity, often the manufacturer, responsible for its behavior when it's driving itself. These companies must keep their vehicles safe and compliant with British laws.
The law will prevent companies from using vague terms in advertising materials. Specific terms and symbols will be reserved for marketing authorized self-driving cars, and using them improperly will be against the law.
These laws are based on recommendations from a review of self-driving vehicle regulations conducted by the Law Commission of England and Wales and the Scottish Law Commission. This review involved several years of legal work, public consultations, and input from various organizations and individuals.
The UK government is also providing funding and support for trials of self-driving technologies, which are expected to create thousands of new jobs. This support is aimed at developing self-driving passenger and logistics services.
the UK is taking important steps to make self-driving cars safe and accessible, with a focus on user protection and clear rules for the industry. This could not only enhance transportation but also create a thriving sector in the country.
