Space Forge's Quantum Leap: Pioneering In-Space Manufacturing for Defense Technology in the UK

Lion Herald Newsletter | Issue #14 - Monday / November 6, 2023 | Lincoln, UK

Dear Lion Herald Reader,

Cutting-edge manufacturing of semiconductors vital for frontline communications is set to take a giant leap into space as a British company receives a substantial funding boost.

Space Forge, headquartered in South Wales, is pioneering the world's inaugural in-space manufacturing platform, supported by a £499,000 investment through a collaborative initiative with Northrop Grumman under the Ministry of Defence's Defence Technology Exploitation Programme (DTEP).

This revolutionary technology is poised to produce components used in radars and frontline battlefield communications. Material manufacturing in the unique conditions of space promises unmatched purity due to extreme temperatures and minimal contamination, holding the potential to reshape the supply chains for UK defense.

As an integral part of DTEP's broader mission, this funding is dedicated to nurturing innovation within small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across the UK. It aims to empower companies to seize new opportunities, cultivate industrial capabilities, and provide innovative solutions to defense challenges both domestically and internationally.

Through the support of DTEP, Space Forge will not only offer innovative solutions to defense issues via cutting-edge science but also bolster the South Wales community with high-skilled employment, aligning with the Prime Minister's priority of economic growth and regional development.

In the UK government's commitment to engaging with small businesses within the defense sector, Minister for Defence Procurement, James Cartlidge, hosted a gathering of British SMEs in Cardiff today, each leading the charge in modern defense capabilities.

Minister for Defence Procurement, James Cartlidge, remarked:

"The work underway at Space Forge, and other SMEs, is of paramount importance to the success of our future operations. We are unwavering in our support for their efforts to ensure our defense capabilities remain at the forefront of technological innovation.

This visit reinforces our dedication to fostering partnerships with leading institutions that drive innovation in the defense sector, ensuring our Armed Forces are equipped with the most advanced capabilities."

SMEs occupy a pivotal role within the UK defense landscape, sustaining industrial capacity, and facilitating the realization of defense aspirations. They also contribute essential expertise and foster a diverse range of high-quality jobs across the UK.

Joshua Western, CEO and Co-founder of Space Forge, expressed his excitement about the partnership:

"This is an incredibly exciting partnership for Space Forge. Collaborating with Northrop Grumman to secure defense supply chains for the Ministry of Defence marks a crucial milestone in demonstrating the value of in-space manufacturing. National security is a shared responsibility, and this Atlantic partnership is a cornerstone in building new capabilities and prosperity."

During his visit, Defense Minister Cartlidge engaged in discussions with leading experts at Space Forge to gain insights into the latest advancements in space capabilities. The significant funding provided by DTEP ensures that the UK will remain at the forefront of space-age technology for defense, fortifying our security capabilities for years to come.
