UK Secures £10 Million Funding Boost for Mars Rover Mission
Lion Herald Newsletter | Issue #29 - Thursday / November 23, 2023 | Lincoln, UK

Dear Lion Herald Reader
A new milestone for the mission to explore life on Mars was reached Today. A UK team has secured over £10 million to replace crucial Russian components in the Rosalind Franklin Mars Rover. The announcement, made by Space Minister Andrew Griffith, underscores the nation's commitment to advancing space exploration.
"Today's announcement marks a major boost for the European mission to explore life on Mars. A UK firm has been awarded over £10 million to replace crucial Russian components in the Rosalind Franklin Mars Rover," says Griffith.
Originally slated for a 2022 launch, the rover faced setbacks after collaboration with Russia's space agency was canceled following the Ukraine invasion. To propel the mission forward, the UK Space Agency is injecting an additional £10.7 million into a UK team, led by the University of Aberystwyth, to develop a key instrument named Enfys.
"This UK investment is an exciting opportunity to enhance our understanding of the Red Planet and perhaps finally answer that very question: Is there life on Mars?" expresses Andrew Griffith, Science, Research, and Innovation Minister.
The Enfys instrument, meaning 'rainbow' in Welsh, is poised to play a crucial role in identifying targets on the Martian surface for sampling and analysis. Dr. Matt Gunn, Principal Investigator on Enfys, describes it as a "challenging and complex technical endeavor" with the potential to significantly contribute to the search for signs of life on Mars.
Collaborating with University College London’s Mullard Space team’s panoramic camera, Enfys will enable the rover to drill for samples, potentially revealing evidence of life on the Red Planet. Dr. Paul Bate, Chief Executive of the UK Space Agency, emphasizes the significance of this collaboration and the UK's contribution to Mars exploration.
"The UK-built Rosalind Franklin rover is a truly world-leading piece of technology at the frontier of space exploration. It is fantastic that experts from the UK can also provide a key instrument for this mission, using UK Space Agency funding," states Dr. Bate.
The announcement comes on the final day of the UK Space Conference in Belfast, where global experts in government, industry, and academia have convened to shape the future of space exploration. Dr. Bate sees this as an opportunity to not only advance our understanding of Mars but also to strengthen collaboration across the fast-growing UK space sector and economy.
The funding follows the Chancellor's commitment to allocate almost £47 million in the current financial year to boost activity and innovation in the Earth observation sector, aligning with the UK's re-entry into Copernicus from January 2024.
"The fund will support businesses that use Earth observation data, including small and medium enterprises, to explore new projects and bolster the economy, with around 18% of UK GDP underpinned by satellite services," explains a representative from the Chancellor's office.
The Chancellor also confirmed £15 million for the European Space Agency Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems program. This funding will support the UK’s Connectivity in Low Earth Orbit scheme, crucial for offering connectivity in remote and rural parts of the UK.
"The UK's funding boost represents a significant step forward in the Mars exploration mission. It showcases the nation's commitment to advancing space technology, contributing to the global quest for extraterrestrial life, and fostering collaboration within the burgeoning UK space sector," concludes Dr. Bate.
May the Enfys instrument, with its innovative capabilities, play a pivotal role in uncovering the mysteries of the Red Planet. Here's to the success of the Rosalind Franklin Mars Rover mission, as it carves new paths in space exploration and inspires future endeavors. May the team's efforts unlock the secrets of Mars, bringing us closer to answering age-old questions about the potential for life beyond our own blue planet. Best wishes for a triumphant mission ahead.
