UK Unveils £2 Billion Vision for Engineering Biology to Revolutionize Medicine, Food, and Environmental Protection

Lion Herald Newsletter | Issue #35 - Wednesday / December 6, 2023 | Lincoln, UK

Dear Lion Herald Reader,

The UK government has announced a £2 billion vision for engineering biology, aiming to transform the fields of medicine, agriculture, and environmental protection. Science Minister Andrew Griffith revealed the comprehensive plan, which sets out the government's strategy to harness the potential of engineering biology over the next decade. This visionary initiative is poised to position the UK as a global leader in the field, fostering innovation, economic growth, and job creation.

Why it matters

Engineering biology applies engineering principles to biological systems, enabling the construction of new or redesigned biological entities. This innovative approach has already yielded remarkable breakthroughs, such as the development of lifesaving mRNA vaccines like those used in the fight against COVID-19, cultivated meat, and the conversion of waste into aviation fuel.

The government's ambitious £2 billion vision is a critical step in realizing the potential of engineering biology. The funding aims to support research and development, infrastructure, and regulatory reforms, with a focus on six key priorities:

  1. Investment in R&D: The government plans to target public investment toward world-class engineering biology research and development, fostering innovation and the creation of new products.

  2. Infrastructure Development: A plan for UK facilities supporting start-ups and scale-ups in engineering biology will be developed in 2024, reducing costs and supporting early-stage innovation.

  3. Talent Pool Growth: To match the demand from academia and industry, the UK will invest in fellowships and doctoral training, including the new Discovery Fellowships, covering scientific, technical, and entrepreneurial skills.

  4. Regulatory Support: The government aims to work with regulatory bodies to ensure a conducive landscape for engineering biology-derived products to reach the market. The Engineering Biology Regulators' Network will implement regulatory sandboxes to facilitate this.

  5. Adoption in the Wider Economy: The UK government will spearhead the adoption of engineering biology in various sectors, collaborating with investors and customers to showcase innovative firms.

  6. World Leadership in Responsible Innovation: By 2030, the UK seeks to be a world leader in responsible engineering biology innovation. An open dialogue on the benefits, limitations, and risks of the technology will be encouraged, shaping international norms and standards.

The Engineering Biology Steering Group

As part of the vision, the government is launching the Engineering Biology Steering Group. This group will bring together policymakers, business leaders, and innovators to guide the government's approach to engineering biology. This collaborative effort aims to ensure responsible and effective development in this transformative field.

Industry leaders have welcomed the government's visionary commitment. Jen Keane, Co-founder and CEO of Modern Synthesis, praised the £2 billion investment, emphasizing its potential to catalyze breakthroughs and solve societal challenges at scale. Dr. Hayaatun Sillem, CEO of the Royal Academy of Engineering, commended the strategic approach and highlighted the exciting opportunities for cheaper, greener products and manufacturing methods.

Steve Bates, CEO of the UK BioIndustry Association (BIA), emphasized the transformative potential of engineering biology in addressing global challenges and welcomed the government's focus on it as a strategic priority.

David Bishop, Investor Relations and Corporate Affairs Director at Croda, recognized the importance of engineering biology in transforming multiple industries and expressed full support for the government's decision to invest in its successful implementation.

Building on Past Success

The UK's leadership in engineering biology has been fostered by early investments over the last decade, including over £100 million through UK Research and Innovation's Synthetic Biology for Growth program. An additional £73 million is being invested in Engineering Biology Missions Hubs and Mission Awards, building on the country's reputation as a hub of innovation in the field.

Clusters of strength in engineering biology are spread across the UK, from Glasgow and Edinburgh to Bristol and Norwich, highlighting the nationwide impact and potential of this transformative technology.

The UK's £2 billion vision for engineering biology marks a significant milestone in the country's commitment to scientific innovation and economic growth. With a focus on responsible development, collaboration, and investment in critical areas, this comprehensive strategy is set to position the UK at the forefront of engineering biology breakthroughs, revolutionizing medicine, food production, and environmental protection on a global scale.
